This growth has been fed by equally unprecedented natural resource consumption and environmental impacts, including conversion of large portions of the natural world to human use, which have prompted recurring concern about whether the world’s natural resource base is capable of sustaining such growth. To some degree, this concern is supported by simple mathematics: exponential physical growth in a finite world eventually generates absurd results. This session will demonstrate the difficulties related to resource scarcity through an interactive exercise, followed by a discussion led by BES member Lean Pons. Aug 2 "Water Conservation: ways to save water in and around the home"-- BES Member and Water Conservation Practitioner Lisa Alderson will demonstrate how water use is distributed throughout the home and yard, provide tips for reducing water use, demonstrate how to test fixtures and detect leaks, and discuss opportunities for replacing fixtures and appliances with more water-efficient ones. National Museum of Natural History in Baird Auditorium 10th St & Constitution Ave NW Wash DC A free public conference on making the transition to zero carbon emissions. Featuring a team of expert speakers from both sides of the Atlantic, including: * Sir John Houghton: Nobel Laureate and former co-chair of the IPCC. * Colin Hines: Co-author of the groundbreaking Green New Deal report * Richard Heinberg: Peak Oil expert and Senior Fellow at the Post Carbon Institute This conference brings together leading environmental thinkers and doers from the nation of Wales to share their ideas and actions with the United States. And builds bridges between two countries, so different in scale yet both affected by the same challenges: climate change, energy security and economic security. Starts by analysing our global predicament and move on to discuss the tools that we can use to fix our broken systems and strengthen those that are working. Solutions exist in energy, economics, construction and land-use, yet all need rapid roll-out to reduce our green house gas emissions to zero. Grounds discussions within the Welsh experience of sustainability yet focuses on implementing solutions that are applicable to all communities in this time of change. Inspires a movement from words to action.
